The Refuge will celebrate the 23nd anniversary of International Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 21, 2016.  The 2016 IMBD theme is “Spread Your Wings for Bird Conservation.”

SPECIAL NOTE:  This year we have added an “Early Bird” bird walk.  Meet at 5:30 AM at the Rte 78 parking lot.  We will be birding the Black/Maquam Creek Trail.  (Registration for this walk is not necessary.)

Regular activities will begin at 7:30 AM with an orientation at the refuge Visitor Center.  Participants will split up into groups, including bird walks on several refuge trails, two birding trips by boat, and a “beginner’s” walk on the Discovery Trail.  Each group will record  all species and as many individuals within those species as they can and then tally the results over a light lunch.  All birding participants will return to the Visitor Center by 11:00 AM to tally results and have lunch.

At approximately 1:00 PM we will have a presentation by Guest Speaker—Boomer Malanchuk, a graduate student at SUNY-Plattsburgh.  He will talk about his 2015 research on cavity nesting waterfowl on the refuge.

Also, the opening of the “Art on the Refuge” art exhibit will take place at 10:00 AM.  The exhibit will continue until July 16.  Artists are asked to submit paintings, photos, etc., of birds that are found on the refuge.  (Click here for a list of birds.)  Information about entering artworks in the exhibit will be posted here in the near future.

Please call 802-868-4781 to register for this activity.   Also please check back closer to the event date for any changes/additions to the schedule.
